Ridiculous Handicaps

In an earlier article I outlined some Arccos stats that highlighted the difference between an average golfer (18 handicap), scratch player and the professionals and well, it seems like the pros really know how to swing a club. I mean, I struggle to hit the actual ball some days, let alone get it onto a green a hundred meters away.

That fact that these guys and girls can stand up in front of all those spectators. With huge amounts of money at stake and have the nerve to perform a particular shot with such accuracy is incredible. Which is more then I can say for myself. If a random group catches up and I have to tee off in front of them I turn to water.

Donā€™t forget these guys play on some of the longest and hardest courses in the world. The greens are curated to perfection, rough so long youā€™d lose a small child let alone a little white ball. Ask Shae Wool-Cobb, his ball was literally sitting on top of another at the NZ Open and he still didnā€™t see it.

I came across this tweet from Lou Stagner ā€œthe golf stat proā€ and just check out these numbers from back in 2020. Ricky Fowler tops the chart with his best reaching +8.5 šŸ¤Æand the best Aussie is Jason Day averaging +6.1

New Ball Roll back Rule

Earlier this week Mike Whan, CEO of the USGA, and Martin Slumbers, CEO of the R&A announced plans to roll back golf ball for elite completions.

If the governing bodies have their way, professionals and elite amateurs on tours and in tournaments that adopt the rule will hit the ball shorter distances. Rules for everyday golfers arenā€™t expected to change. (Good I canā€™t afford to loose anymore distance)

By changing the way it tests golf balls, the USGA can effectively make every ball currently in play on Tour non-conforming. How? The USGA mandates that balls can only fly a certain distance (290 meters, with a 2.7 meter tolerance) under the prescribed conditions. If you change those conditions but not the 290 limit, the ball has to change as a result.

How significant will the difference be? One pro estimated a decrease in distance by 15 - 20 meters with the new ball, although itā€™s tough to estimate exactly given the number of factors involved.

The change would require equipment manufacturers to return to the drawing board to create a new ball to meet the new testing standards.
