For those of us that need just a quick summary
KPMG Performance Insights: Advanced analytics has transformed professional sports, including golf. In the past, women's golf lacked access to these insights, but that changed two years ago when the LPGA Tour partnered with KPMG. The KPMG Performance Insights platform has provided LPGA pros with valuable data to improve their game. It has also influenced team selections for events like the Solheim Cup. The availability of this data has enhanced media coverage and fan experience, allowing a deeper understanding of player performance. Now, fans can access the same data through a new web portal. The program is just getting started, with the potential for more insights and comparisons as more data is collected. Advanced analytics continues to shape women's golf, empowering players and captivating fans.
Five to watch: Players to watch in the KPMG Women's PGA Championship:
Jin Young Ko: With two wins this season, Ko's tee-to-green game has been exceptional, ranking high in key areas.
Nelly Korda: A defending champion has multiple top-six finishes and stands out in driving and putting statistics.
Rose Zhang: In her LPGA debut, Zhang showcased strong performance off the tee and around the green.
Leona Maguire: Maguire's consistency around the green has earned her a second LPGA title and numerous bogey-free rounds.
Linn Grant: Despite limited play, Grant impresses with her driving abilities and ranks high globally.
Sergio Garcia and Joaquin Niemann: Fresh off their success at the US Open, will be competing in the Asian Tour's St Andrews Bay Championship. Other notable players, including Charl Schwartzel and Mito Pereira, have also confirmed their participation in the tournament. The event holds significance as the first in the birthplace of golf and is part of the Asian Tour's UK Summer Swing. The Torrance Course at Fairmont St Andrews, known for its stunning views, will provide a challenging test for the golfers.
Eight-time major champion: Tom Watson has expressed his concerns and criticism in an open letter to PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and fellow players regarding the PGA Tour's partnership with the DP World Tour and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. Watson questioned the lack of transparency and due process in reaching the agreement and raised important questions about the implications and potential compromises for the Tour. He also highlighted the controversy surrounding Saudi Arabia's involvement in terrorism and human rights issues. Watson's letter adds to the growing scrutiny faced by the PGA Tour for its decision and its perceived abandonment of principles for financial gain.
Jon Rahm: the FedExCup points leader and world No. 2, expressed his uncertainty regarding the proposed partnership between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. He mentioned that he doesn't expect to receive many answers from the Player Advisory Council meeting. Rahm acknowledged the abundance of unanswered questions and emphasised that dwelling on the situation would be a waste of time. Rahm is participating in the Travelers Championship, a tournament he wouldn't typically play if it weren't for its designated status. He expressed gratitude for the charter flights provided to make the cross-country trip from the U.S. Open in Los Angeles easier. Rahm appreciated the flexibility in this year's schedule, allowing him to return to the tournament.
Nelly Korda: Back and ready to compete at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship after recovering from back pain. The World No. 2 golfer assures that she is pain-free and fully committed to the tournament. Korda, who hasn't won a title since November 2021, emphasises the importance of playing only when fully healthy. She draws inspiration from athletes like Rafael Nadal who have overcome injuries. Although her recent back pain was less severe compared to previous health issues, Korda appreciates the time away from the sport and is even more motivated to succeed. Her previous major win came at the 2021 KPMG Women's PGA Championship, and she is excited to compete alongside top-ranked players Jin Young Ko and Lydia Ko in this year's tournament at Baltusrol.
