The Daily Tee Off

Come on have a look

Good morning, and just like a long walk with the putter, starting the day off with another instalment of the daily tee off…. Nothing better.

Here’s what we’ll be touching on today:

  • LIV Golf round one winner Charles Howell lll interesting club choice.

  • Are legacy golf brands on the way out?

  • Spotlight - Asher Golf

  • Some social satisfaction

Charles Howell lll interesting club choice.

Charles Howell lll secured his first professional win on tour since 2018. Also, not to mention leading the Crushers to whopping 9 shot victory. Recording his first birdie on the second hole, he went on to shoot a bogey free -8 (63). Finishing a top of the leaderboard at -16, 4 shots clear of second placed Peter Uihlein -12 and 6 clear of third place Branden Grace -10.

As they say drive for show put for doe and he definitely put on a putting display. Getting around with 22 putts on his way to card a 63. What is interesting is the choice of putter, the L.A.B Golf - Link.1(pictured below). A club that is in their words is “Respectfully Better”. Who the hell can argue that point after what Charles just showed us all.

Made In the USA and built and balanced by L.A.B. Golf Craftsmen in a factory outside Eugene, Oregon. The Link.1 is 303 stainless steel construction mated with a steel shaft. It honours the class blade shaping by sits squarely by it’s self. In my opinion this is a thing of beauty.

This leads into the second topic for the day. Are legacy brands on the way out?

After seeing a putting display like that, with a brand that isn’t really front of mind for lot of the golfing community, is fantastic for the game. It showed that not only can it perform on the big stage but it can dominate. It proves that your equipment doesn’t need to have the Titilest, Scotty Cameron, Callaway, Odyssey, Taylormade markings to be a successful addition to the bag. It also for me shines a light on what has been bubbling away under the surface for sometime now and in my opinion is going to explode!

My big thought is, does this open the flood gates for lesser known brands to rise up and start taking larger chunks of the pie? I know they are limited to rules and regulations of the governing body, but equipment innovation has slowed down with companies spending more and more on the marketing side trying to convince the market they’ve a locked something special which in reality it’s a few new visuals.

Is it going to take some new players in the industry to think in a totally new way to push us in the right direction, propelling us forward into a new era of club design and performance. I certainly think so.

Reply to this email because I’d love to get your take on this and hear about any brands you’ve come across that the wider community needs to know about.
