Jack Nicklaus praises strong field, but top players missing: Jack Nicklaus, host of the Memorial Tournament, commended the field for this year's event, calling it one of the best in history. The tournament features top-ranked players, including seven of the top 10 in the world rankings and many leading contenders in the FedEx Cup standings. However, it does not include some major champions and notable players who have joined the LIV Golf league. Nicklaus shared his thoughts on the PGA Tour-LIV Golf situation and expressed his focus on the players participating in the Memorial Tournament. He reflected on the significant increase in earnings for professional golfers today compared to his era, emphasizing the importance of the game and competition over financial rewards.
Politics getting in the way: Sergio Garcia's exclusion from this year's European Ryder Cup team due to his resignation from the DP World Tour membership has sparked disappointment among his fellow players, including Jon Rahm. Rahm, who had a successful partnership with Garcia in the previous Ryder Cup, expressed sadness over the situation and highlighted the importance of a Spanish duo in the event, drawing inspiration from the legendary partnership of Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal. The resignation was part of a group of European players leaving the tour after fines were imposed for joining LIV Golf. Rahm believes that politics should not interfere with such a significant and special event, emphasising that the best players should represent the European side, regardless of their tour affiliations.
Heading down under: The ISPS HANDA Australian Open will be held in Sydney from November 30 to December 3 at The Australian and The Lakes golf clubs. The event will feature a joint tournament format for men and women, along with the Australian All Abilities Championship. Lucas Herbert and Stephanie Kyriacou have confirmed their participation. The tournament will have a minimum prize money of AUD 3.4 million. The men's event is co-sanctioned by the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia and DP World Tour, while the women's event is sanctioned by the WPGA Tour of Australasia. Some format changes include a reduced field size and a single cut after 36 holes.
Utah bound: The LPGA has announced that it will hold a tournament in Utah in 2025 at the Black Desert Resort Golf Course in Ivins, near St. George. The course, designed by Tom Weiskopf, features wide fairways, unique rock formations, and will be accompanied by various amenities including hotels, residences, trails, a spa, and retail spaces. The LPGA expressed excitement about the partnership with Black Desert Resort and the opportunity to provide a challenging venue for its athletes.
