Snippets

  • Onto the next one: The 2023 U.S. Open is fast approaching, following closely on the heels of the PGA Championship. The USGA has announced that 33 players have earned exemptions for the tournament, bringing the total number of exempt players to 84. Notable exemptions include Jason Day, Patrick Reed, and Tyrrell Hatton, while Cameron Davis secured his spot after an impressive performance at the PGA Championship. (Link)

  • They pocketed how much: Brooks Koepka proved once again that performing well in major championships is rewarding, as he secured his fifth major title at the 2023 PGA Championship. The victory at Oak Hill Country Club in New York earned him a handsome prize of $USD3.15 million, while Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland, the runners-up, will each receive $USD1.54 million. Take a look at the complete breakdown of prize money payouts for all players in the 2023 PGA Championship. (Link)

  • Less is more: Playing in LIV Golf allows Koepka to focus on the Majors and potentially surpass legendary names in Major winners. With his fifth Major, he joins Seve, Thomson, Nelson, Braid, and Taylor. Only 14 players have won more Majors, including Faldo, Mickelson, Trevino, and a group of seven-time champions. Koepka is just two Majors away from them and has a good chance of catching up. (Link)

  • Tech helps speed it up: Rangefinders have been seen in use at the PGA Championship, raising questions about the rules. Unlike other men's Majors, the PGA Championship allows their use. The PGA of America made this change in 2021 to improve the flow of play. While they are helpful for quick and accurate yardages, caddies often rely more on their own yardage books. The use of rangefinders during the championship has sparked a debate on their impact on the game's pace. (Link)

  • She’s at it again: Rose Zhang, the Stanford sophomore, secured a remarkable victory at the NCAA Division I Women's Championship, becoming the first women's player to win consecutive NCAA individual titles. Despite starting the final round four shots behind, Zhang caught up to USC freshman Catherine Park and emerged victorious by one shot. With her win, Zhang also tied the NCAA record for wins in a single season with eight. Despite some initial uncertainties, Zhang's resilient performance showcased her determination and exceptional talent. Stanford will now move forward to the team match play as favorites to defend their NCAA team title. (Link)

  • One hole in extra time: The IOA Golf Classic presented by LPT Realty was shortened to 36 holes due to unplayable course conditions caused by weather. Three players, Jenny Coleman, Sophie Hausmann, and Dottie Ardina, finished the second round tied at -10 and entered a playoff. Jenny Coleman emerged as the champion by making a birdie on the first playoff hole. The tournament featured weather delays, but players like Roberta Liti, Britney Yada, and Katherine Smith showcased patience and resilience throughout the event. (Link)
