Fitzpatrick for the win
Matt Fitzpatrick was the last man standing after defeating defending champion Jordan Spieth in a three-hole playoff. Fitzpatrick clinched the win by hitting a 9-iron to less than a foot on the 18th hole. The same club he used to win his major championship at the U.S. Open last June. Now you try telling me someone doesn’t have a favourite club.
Fitzpatrick, who grew up playing the Hilton Head Island golf course on family vacations, called it his favorite course on the PGA Tour behind only Augusta National.
Spieth had looks at tournament-clinching putts on the first two playoff holes, but it wasn't until the second time they headed back to the 18th hole that Fitzpatrick was able to seal the deal by taking dead-aim for the pin. Fitzpatrick shot a career-low round of 63 on Saturday to take a one-shot lead heading into the final round. Spieth fired off a final round 66 to enter the playoff.
Fitzpatrick will be the first Englishman to don the tartan jacket since 1984. The RBC Heritage tournament is a "designated event" that offers a huge payday, with the purse boosted to $US20 million and the first-place prize increasing significantly from $US1.44 million to $US3.6 million.
Here are the final payouts for the tournament:
Matt Fitzpatrick winner $US3,600,000
Jordan Spieth playoff runner-up $US2,180,000
Patrick Cantlay -16 $US1,380,000
Xander Schauffele -15 $US980,000
Sahith Theegala, Hayden Buckley -14 $US772,500
