Fairway Foundry: Edition 1 - Hell for Leather
In todays email:
Good morning, we are The Daily Tee Off, and today I have something special for you all.
From the moment I started this newsletter, my goal has been simple: To seek out new and exciting golf brands and share their stories.
The world of golf is a lot bigger than just the few major manufactures, all sitting at the top of the tree with seemingly endless marketing budgets. There are countless smaller brands that are pumping out some extraordinary gear that deserves to be pushed into the spotlight.
Can one brand take on these giants alone? Maybe. But can we all band together and, as a collective, take it up to these guys? Absolutely! So, in today's edition, I would like to introduce a new segment called "The Fairway Foundry." It's a place where I will dive deeper into the brands and their founders to understand more about them and the brands they've created.

About
Fairway Foundry Episode 1: Hell for Leather - A Unique Golf Brand Born During Lockdown
Today in the first edition, I would like to introduce you to Hell for Leather - A premium golf accessory brand that specializes in creating high-quality head covers. So, let's dive in and take a closer look at what makes Hell for Leather such a great brand!
The recent pandemic brought many challenges, including restrictions on social gatherings and outdoor activities. However, for some, the lockdown provided an opportunity to explore new hobbies and start innovative businesses. For two avid golf enthusiasts, Desmond Jones and Garry-David Phillips, lockdown was the perfect time to start a golf brand that would challenge the norms of the industry.
Having met 15 years earlier, Des claims to have introduced Garry to the beautiful game of golf and also doesn't shy away from the fact that he is responsible for teaching Garry everything he knows 😉. With a strong interest in football, scuba diving, gaming, and the outdoors, their design inspiration is never too far away.
HFL (Hell for Leather) is a Scottish-based brand that focuses on delivering unique and premium golf headcovers made with the highest quality materials. They started out with just an embroidery machine, a sewing machine, and a whole lot of YouTube tutorials, learning how to create the best covers available.
Garry, who has a degree in graphic design, claims credit for most of the design work, but Des also contributes his ideas. The result is a collection of headcovers that are bold, strong, and characterised, perfect for those who want to stand out on the golf course.
The process of creating the head covers was not without its challenges. The founders admit to having a considerable amount of write-offs and disasters stored away. However, over time, they learned from their mistakes and got to the current stage where their products were so good they have started to amassed a loyal group of followers on their social pages.
Having introduced "The Monster" to my bag a number of weeks ago, I can truly vouch for the incredible attention to detail and the use of the highest quality materials. The leatherwork is on a level that could be attributed to luxury handbags, let alone golf accessories. Even the magnet locking system gives you a nice sturdy satisfying click every time you return the putter back into the cover. Let’s not forget the added style and personality that Nessy, the big bold green monster adds to my bag.
As a new golf brand, HFL is still in its early stages, with only two people running the show. However, their dedication and passion for the brand are evident in the quality of their products. The brand's focus on delivering unique and premium head covers has been well-received by their followers, and there is excitement about what the future holds.
Both founders are not content to rest on their laurels. They have plans to expand their product line beyond head covers and are constantly exploring new designs and ideas. They want to create a brand that challenges the norms of the golf industry and delivers truly unique products that golfers will love.
Both Des and Garry work full-time jobs, but the dream is that HFL grows to the level where it becomes their full-time commitment. Let's all show our support, spread the word and get around the guys from Hell for Leather. 💪🏻
